IHS Markit Channels and Programming Intelligence has tracked 350 mergers and acquisitions (M&As) involving content producers over the five years from 2013 until the end of 2017. Content producer M&A activity has increased, from 42 deals in 2013 to 102 in 2017. ITV and Fremantle Media were the most active buyers in terms of number of deals in the last five years. However, in value terms, UK-based deals are dwarfed by NBCU's $3.8 billion acquisition of Dreamworks Animation deal and Dalian Wanda’s $3.5 billion purchase of Legendary Pictures.

- However, ITV’s total reported deal value of $1.2 billion (nine out of 23 deals) is dwarfed by the Dreamworks Animation deal and Dalian Wanda’s acquisition of Legendary Pictures
- Scripted producer M&A deals have grown by 29.2%—a trend clearly affected by the boom in drama.
- Unscripted producer M&A has grown more slowly (8%) and has declined as a proportion of total deal activity
