Although 2017 was fully loaded with 5G events and marked by the completion of the first iteration of the brand new 5G radio, there is little doubt 2018 will see a significant increase in 5G activity, balanced between a full-blown live 5G showcase, the completion of the 5G new radio standard, and early 5G rollouts. The year will start with the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, followed by the rush to finish the specification of the standalone 5G new radio by the end of 1H18, and will wrap up with the anticipated launch of US fixed wireless access (FWA) services in 2H18. Nonetheless, this solid activity will not be substantial enough to pull the global mobile infrastructure market out of its funk, but as consolation a 5G marketing war in the US will certainly entertain the whole industry.
