Austin, TX (November 17, 2017) – The annual IHS Markit Rack Power Distribution Unit Report reveals that the rack PDU market revenue grew 6.1% globally in 2016, an increase over the 5.8% growth seen in 2015. Revenue growth was primarily driven by intelligent products (in line with the trend over the past 5 years), but non-intelligent products are still growing as well. Despite all the advanced features and benefits of intelligent units, many fast-growing developing regions use basic PDUs in addition to some extremely advanced hyperscale data centers. Intelligent units are predicted to continue to gain share over the next five years, outpacing the growth of non-intelligent units and contributing to overall revenue growth.

Within the intelligent rack PDU category, rack PDUs with input-level metering remain the largest category in terms of units sold, but the high-end switched rack PDUs with outlet level metering grew at the highest rate, a trend that has continued over the past few years and shows no signs of letting up.

In the first half of 2017, rack PDU market revenue declined 9% globally compared to the first half of 2016, according to the most recent data from the IHS Markit Rack PDU Quarterly Index. Fewer companies report into the Quarterly Rack PDU Index than the full annual report, so this figure is not exact but gives a good indication of market direction. Additionally, companies reporting into the quarterly index are more heavily weighted in the Americas region, making this number more likely to be reflective of American market performance, and North America in particular. It is possible, for example, that Rack PDU providers in Asia performed better than what is reported in the Quarterly Index, which would result in less of a global market decline than the Index currently shows.

Regardless, given the indication demonstrated by the Quarterly Index, it is unlikely that sales in the second half of the year will fully make up for two-quarters of decline. Historically, the rack PDU market performs better in the second half of the year, so it is likely that growth of the rack PDU market in 2017 overall will be flat to slightly negative. Forecast updates to be published at the end of the year will provide updates on IHS Markit’s projections.
