There is no doubt the games market is still in the midst of a huge transition. Despite the fact that most companies in our publisher tracking work have transitioned such that the majority of their revenue comes from digital channels, the underlying upheaval and continuing uncertainty persist. The push to engage gamers for longer periods of time with an ongoing franchise, rather than simply a product that burns brightly but quickly around launch, is causing a definite shift for smaller publishers.

Highlights:

  • Blizzard's push to diversify beyond Warcraft continues to reap rewards
  • Certain key titles underperform, highlighting need for new strategies
  • Increase esports focus produces greater viewer engagement
