A year on from its worldwide launch, Netflix has stepped up original productions, including new unscripted shows and films productions outside the US in an increasing array of languages. The number of non-US originals increased from a single title in 2013 to eight in 2015 and 27 in 2016. In aggregate, Netflix has commissioned 80 productions of this kind (including upcoming projects). Spanish (15 titles) and Japanese (six) are the largest non-English language category, but Netflix has also been active in Anglophone territories, with 18 productions in Canada and 17 in the UK. In 2016, 27% of its original scripted productions were shot outaside the US.
However, Netflix has created a new model of origination where even local productions are expected to boost its offering in other countries, an approach described by CEO Reed Hastings as ‘local production, global distribution’.
