Trilliant and Siemens announced a partnership to build a smart grid infrastructure supporting distributed automation and smart metres in Mexico City and the wider State of Mexico.
The project was awarded by the Electricity Federal Commission (Comisión Federal de Electricidad, CFE) by means of a tender process. The goal of the initiative is to reduce electricity waste and loss in Mexico City and in the State of Mexico.
The CFE is a Government owned company providing electricity across Mexico. The main objective of the project is to reduce electricity loss associated with the lack of appropriate measurements and maintenance of the electric grid. Trilliant will collaborate with Siemens on three projects providing its smart communication network and platform.
The network that will be deployed include advance metering infrastructure (AMI) and distribution automation (DA) elements. The benefits of the new technology will be multiple: reduction of energy losses, empowering the customers to track their energy usage and needs, and providing the city with a modern more reliable and future-ready electric grid.
The partnership between Trilliant and Siemens combines the two companies’ strengths as it benefits from Trilliant’s Smart Communications Platform and Siemens’ digital grid offerings.
Trilliant will provide its multi-layered networking including wide area network (WAN) and near area network (NAN). Their smart communications platform supports multiple technologies and will allow for remote management and monitoring of smart metres while also enabling CFE to be prepared for a possible future addition of more applications and devices. Regional analysis: Smart Cities in Latin America
The smart city market in Latin America is at a very early stage even compared to that in other regions. According to IHS Markit Smart Cities Project Database as of the third quarter of 2016 the region had only 5.8% of the smart cities market by tracked project.
The main reason for this is that the region has many significant challenges, which may take priority over the development of smart cities projects. While smart city initiatives may serve the purpose of solving some regional issues it is true that many problems may require solutions not necessarily belonging to the “smart” category. For instance, increasing inclusion and reducing social inequalities or lowering the digital divide can be accomplished even without the use of internet of things (IoT) initiatives. [...]
