Following is information and insight from IHS Markit about our H2 2016 DAS Equipment Biannual Market Tracker, which contains data for the half-year ended June 30, 2016.

Bottom Line

  • Worldwide distributed antenna system (DAS) revenue totaled $958 million in the first half of 2016 (H1 2016), dropping 2 percent from H1 2015, dragged down by China and the United States
  • In contrast, DAS revenue grew 8 percent year-over-year in the Caribbean and Latin America (CALA), fueled by DAS upgrades for the summer Olympics in Brazil
  • IHS Markit forecasts the global DAS market to grow at a 1.8 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2015 to 2020

Our Analysis

The global distributed antenna system (DAS) market slumped 2 percent year-over-year in H1 2016, to $958 million, pulled down by China and the United States.

Asia Pacific had a 7 percent year-over-year decline in DAS sales driven by China, where the activity shifted to small cells. In the U.S., the dramatic DAS spending cut observed last year continued along with the shift from large venues such as stadiums to smaller ones.

Meanwhile, in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) the DAS market experienced single-digit growth in H1 2016, partially driven by the soccer Euro cup in France. And in CALA, Brazil alone fueled the DAS activity (+8 percent year-over-year) through major upgrades for the summer Olympics. The promise of new DAS rollouts in Brazil for the Olympics did not materialize because the country remains mired in recession and instead opted for existing DAS upgrades.

As a result of these dynamics, Asia Pacific jumped ahead of North America and became the world’s largest DAS market—with $330 million in total revenue for H1 2016.

Little changed on the DAS market share front in H1 2016. CommScope (including TE Connectivity) continued to lead the global DAS market, followed by Corning Mobile, Cobham Wireless, Comba and SOLiD Technologies.

By 2020, IHS Markit expects the worldwide DAS market to top $2.1 billion, growing at a 1.8 percent five-year CAGR, driven by a combination of coverage and capacity improvements in specific venues and Long Term Evolution (LTE) upgrades.
