America Movil’s Claro Video has launched a free VoD offering within the service dubbed Claro Video Basico. The Basic service offers a selection of 500 titles including movies, TV shows, children’s videos, sports, short films, documentaries, and Claro Video’s original productions “La Hermandad” and “El Torito”.

This new service maintains the same features offered to paying subscribers; content can be streamed to iOS and Android mobile devices, computers, Xbox 360, Windows-based tablets, Samsung, LG, and Sony Smart TVs, as well as through Claro Video’s TV Player. Additionally, content can be viewed concurrently on five devices, a feature common throughout every Latin American country in which it operates. In order to access the free selection, users must register on the site; no credit card or payment needed.

Our analysis

For Claro Video, the free service will expand the user base beyond Claro’s existing subscriber base. Presently, access to Claro Video’s SVoD service is limited to those subscribed to Claro’s mobile, voice, and internet or pay-TV services (either directly or via America Movil subsidiaries) with the exception of Mexico where it is available to the general public.

The free option, will also appeal to viewers in countries such as Argentina and Brazil where free-VoD (FVoD) and ad-supported VoD (AVoD) are very popular and easily accessible online. At the same time, it will give Claro the potion to position premium SVoD and transactional VoD services alongside free, potentially generating additional subscribers and ad-hoc purchase revenue.
