The M600 is the latest device from legacy sports watchmaker, Polar, and also the first smart sports watch without technical compromises. The Polar M600 runs on Android Wear, supports wrist-based heart rate monitoring, has GPS embedded in the device, is waterproof, and packs a battery that can last for up to 48 hours.
For some time, IHS Markit has anticipated legacy sport watchmakers including Polar to enter the smartwatch market. The snowball has seriously started rolling due to advancements in processing and battery technology, which have made it possible to feature GPS on an advanced OS without major compromises. Casio pioneered this emerging trend with its Smart Outdoor Watch, but did not include GPS functionality in its device, which for most consumers is a must-have feature.
Besides being designed with fitness and wellness in mind, the M600 is a fully functioning smartwatch, taking complete advantage of the Android Wear ecosystem. In other words, the device out-competes all other smartwatches in terms of sports and fitness capabilities, and can match the performance of competing devices in terms of general smartwatch functionalities – also why IHS Markit expects fitness enthusiasts and average active consumer to pick up the device. The watch also supports iOS.
As Polar has made its move into the Smartwatch space, it will not be long before other legacy brands such as Suunto and Garmin must show their next move.
