Samsung and SK Telekom have announced plans to build a nationwide IoT network based on LoRaWAN technology to support smart city development. This first-mover strategy has risks; IHS Technology believes that most operators will wait to deploy 3GPP-based LPWAN technologies. The deployment of LoRaWAN runs the risk of being another “WiBro” decision for South Korea. Nevertheless, this is a significant project for smart city development across the globe, not just South Korea. All smart city projects require reliable connectivity in order to help city functions, such as mobility and transport, or energy and resource efficiency, be more responsive, efficient and effective.
