Compared to generally flat or declining  revenues experienced in Q3 by the domestic market, many publishers enjoyed an uptick in Q4. This was due to the Korean Thanksgiving (the biggest holiday of the year), plus some deregulation on web-based board & card games. The PC online gaming market in China is facing challenges to growth that were worsened by seasonality in Q4. Certain Korean publishers – namely Nexon Neowiz and Wemade – whose revenue depends heavily on China suffered significant loss from their overseas business. However, some revenue contribution from games newly launched in the West partly offset these losses.

Highlights:

  • New launches in the West helped counter losses from the Chinese market
  • Amendments of spending limitations started to spark recovery of web-based card & board games
  • NHN Entertainment shuts down more of its PC games
