A Tale of Two PBX Markets in 2015: North America Up While Rest of World Down
By Diane Myers, senior research director, VoIP, UC and IMS, IHS Technology
Tamped by longer business cycles and the move to cloud alternatives, the global enterprise telephony and unified communications (UC) market was down 1 percent in Q4 2015 from Q4 2014, and down 5 percent for the full-year 2015, to $7.4 billion.
Bucking the last few years of declines, North America was a bright spot, notching 6 percent growth for the year. The rest of the world, meanwhile, was down 11 percent.
Businesses continue to migrate to IP—and pure IP PBXs in particular. Pure IP PBXs were the only segment to post year-over-year growth (+ 6 percent) in 2015. Still, pure IP PBXs remain almost half the size of the hybrid segment.
Though UC demand has been strong over the past two years, revenue came to a halt in 2015, falling 2 percent. The decline is attributable to pricing drops as more and more UC functionality is incorporated into PBX packages, the move of UC applications to the cloud and the general competitive environment.
More Enterprise Telephony Market Highlights
- PBX line shipments were slightly down in 2015; hybrid IP PBXs, which appeal to businesses that want to minimize upfront capital outlays on handsets, continue to dominate
- UC platform licenses grew 10 percent in 2015
- As enterprises migrate to IP and UC solutions, the top PBX vendors remain in a battle to gain customers and hold onto existing ones: Cisco led all vendors for the full-year 2015, followed by Avaya
- On the UC front, Microsoft continues to have strong sales, which it looks to carry over to the voice side
