Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 received a lot of attention last week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It was found within several newly announced smartphones at the show from OEMs including Samsung, Xiaomi, LG, Sony, and HP. The uptake in the Snapdragon 820 reverses a trend with the last generation Snapdragon 810 where OEM adoption was a bit scarcer. The future looks much brighter for Qualcomm with the Snapdragon 820 as OEMs are looking to create as much product differentiation as possible in the largely commoditized smartphone market. During Qualcomm’s fiscal Q1 2016 earnings call, management mentioned that there were over 100 products in development using Snapdragon 820, up from around 60 using the 810 during the same timeframe a year ago.
