The Bundesverband Audiovisuelle Medien e.V. (BVV) has released 2015 year end numbers for the physical retail market.

Total market unit sales declined by 4.3% to 100.3 million, with total spending on DVDs and Blu-ray Discs (BD) combined at €1.2 billion, down 4.4% from €1.3 billion at year end 2014. Decline was driven by DVD, with volumes declining by 7.0% to 71.5 million – an improvement over the 12.4% yearly decline recorded between 2013 and 2014 for DVD unit sales. Average price for a DVD was stable at €11.60, with consumer spending on the format €829 million (-7.8% over 2014).

Spending on Blu-ray Disc increased, from €405 in 2014 to €418 at year end 2015, representing an increase of 3.2%.  Average price for a retail BD did increase to reach €14.54, however, it was an increase in unit sales which drove spending.  Unit sales of BD increased by 900k over 2014 levels, to reach 28.8 million in 2015.
