Economic Pressure Impacts Canadian Consumption of Retail Physical Discs

The market for DVD and Blu-ray Disc (BD) purchase in Canada saw significant decline in 2015. Unit sales for DVDs in Canada declined by 24.1% between 2014 and 2015, from 37.6 million down to 28.6 million. Consumer spending on the format also dropped, from CAD$515.5 million down to CAD$411.2 million during the same time period. The average price of a DVD at year end 2015 was CAD$14.40, up 5.0% over 2014.

Consumer spending on Blu-ray Disc also declined, to CAD$252.9 million down from CAD$277.9 million in 2014. This decline in spending was primarily driven by declining BD volumes, which dropped 12.8% to 10.6 million unit sales. The average price for a BD, however, increased by 4.4% over 2014 to CAD$23.86.
