The Consumer Technology Association (CTA), continues to advance its agenda to support growth and development in the technology sector.  To this end, a billboard positioned in one of the main lobbies was eye catching.  It announced the creation of a “State Innovation Scorecard.”  On its website, CTA notes, “A state's ability to provide its residents with fast and reliable Internet service, educate and employ qualified tech workers, and offer a favorable tax system are among the key factors entrepreneurs consider when deciding where to manufacture and sell their products and services.”  Hence, to encourage this type of positive environment CTA scores states based on the following factors:

  • Right to Work
  • Welcomes New Business Models
  • Tax Friendliness
  • Entrepreneurial Activity
  • Fast Internet
  • Tech Workforce
  • Attracts Invesment
  • Grants STEM Degrees
  • Innovation Momentum
  • Innovation-Friendly Sustainable Policies

This comprehensive evaluation provides a great guide for local governments as they seek to attract high technology companies with the economic benefits that come with them.  It also provides companies a helpful guide as they identify the healthiest environments to grow their business.

For 2015, CTA listed the following ten state champions:

  • Delaware
  • District of Columbia
  • Indiana
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • North Carolina
  • South Dakota
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Virginia
