US spending on buying and renting video entertainment has fallen by over 40% in the last 10 years despite the emergence of digital delivery platforms. IHS research shows that the speed of the downturn correlates closely with take-up of Netflix's subscription VOD service, which launched in 2007. In the UK, the average annual rate of decline in consumer spending on physical media has almost doubled since Netflix launched in 2012.

This report examines the impact of the launch of Netflix's SVOD services on the physical video business in these two key world markets, with particular reference to the sale and rental of movies and TV content, the key genres at the heart of both the physical video business and Netflix's online offer.
