Global box office (BO) revenue hit a new all-time high of $36.3 billion in 2014. The key driving forces were the continued growth of China and other emerging box office markets alongside ticket price inflation, according to IHS's in-depth annual review of over 70 international cinema exhibition markets. The international (minus North American) market contributed a new record 71.4% of global box. This highlights the growing significance of international markets with regards to the distribution of key studio titles, although a large proportion of this growth can be accounted for by China.

In this report:

  • International territories accounted for a record 71.4% of global box office
  • Without China, International's share of box office would actually have been down
  • China alone generated 13.3% of total world box office in 2014, up from 9.9% in 2013
  • 2014 general box office malaise stemmed from lacklustre slate from the US Studios
