Sensata has acquired the sensing portfolio of Custom Sensors & Technologies, including Kavlico, BEI, Crydom and Newall product lines, sales, engineering and manufacturing sites in the U.S., UK, Germany, France, China and Mexico. The deal encompasses 2,500 people and 250 engineers, and associated revenues of around $320 million over the past 12 months.

Kavlico supplies linear and rotary position sensors to aerospace OEMs and tier 1 suppliers and pressure sensors to the industrial and heavy vehicle and off-road markets.  BEI provides harsh environment position sensors, optical and magnetic encoders and motion control sensors to the industrial, aerospace, agricultural and medical device markets.  Meanwhile, Crydom manufactures solid state relays for industrial markets and Newall encoders to machinery and machine tool markets.

According to Sensata’s President and CEO, Martha Sullivan, the purchase supports the company’s strategic goal of adding sensing content beyond automotive markets, while building additional scale in pressure sensing.

Comment: Sensata’s move is just part of a recent increase in consolidation of semiconductor and sensor companies….NXP and Freescale, Infineon and International Rectifier, ams and Applied Sensors and more recently CMOS environmental sensors from NXP, etc...
