Amidst challenging market conditions and entrenched competitors in the cellular modem game, Nvidia has decided to wind down the business. The exit from cellular by the chipmaker well known for its graphics processing prowess was to be expected given the lack of traction for its baseband solutions. Management had emphasized a shift away from the mobile phone market last year as the Tegra4i struggled to gain momentum, with limited success at lesser known OEMs like Wiko. Did Nvidia ever have a shot in the cellular baseband business, and could this move have implications on the future of the Tegra Applications Processor business?
