Better-than-expected uptake of PS4 in Q3 has resulted in a strong overall year-on-year uptick for console sales volumes, especially in the PAL sales region. Aggressive bundling activity and a major slate of both first and third-party titles has helped to unlock the pent-up demand for PS4 and Xbox One. The latter console has been further bolstered by its launch into 28 new territories, but the sales disparity between it and the PS4 still persists.

Highlights:

  • PS4 is the strongest selling console across all platforms in Q3
  • Sales gap between PS4 and Xbox One remains pronounced in Q3, although latter successfully builds out its presence
  • USA and PAL see significant year-on-year growth, but Japan remains challenging, even in terms of its stalwart category of handheld console gaming
