Fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) is the preferred ultimate broadband access technology of nearly all network operators, but alternative solutions utilizing copper networks continue to gain ground as interim options in cases where FTTP deployment is not feasible. Technology vendors and ISPs work with much higher frequency spectrum bands to achieve higher speeds, but bandwidth gains result in much shorter copper twisted pair loop distances. This report delves into the latest technology trends and developments in fixed broadband access networks evolution.

Highlights:

  • Fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) is the preferred ultimate broadband access technology of nearly all network operators, but alternative solutions utilizing copper networks continue to gain ground as interim options in cases where FTTP deployment is not feasible.
  • Technology vendors and ISPs work with much higher frequency spectrum bands to achieve higher speeds, but bandwidth gains result in much shorter copper twisted pair loop distances.
  • G.fast/FTTdp (fibre-to-the-distribution-point) promises to deliver up to 1 Gbps aggregate (sum of downstream and upstream speeds) on very short loops of 50 metres, and 500 Mbps and 200 Mbps at 100 metres and 200 metres, respectively.
  • First successful field trial connected Telekom Austria A1 customers in a historical building in central Vienna – indicating that historical city centres, where FTTP deployment is not always feasible are good potential G.fast deployment locations.
  • Commercial G.fast roll-out expected at the beginning of 2016 with ISPs such as BT, Orange, Telecom Italia and others working with major vendors (Alcatel Lucent, Adtran, Huawei, etc.) on trials across Europe, North America and Asia Pacific.
