Transactional consumer spending on movies declined 2.2% in 2013 to $58.4bn.
- But the worldwide total is forecast to increase to $61.6bn by 2017, a CAGR of 1.3%.
Consumer spending on transactional movies increased in two out of five regions in 2013.
- The mature markets of N America and W Europe declined by 2.8% and 2.5% respectively over 2012 - the result of deep declines for spending on physical discs.
- Asia Pacific declined by 2.9% year-on-year; however, this is not representative of a decline in total consumption in the region. Both the decline of physical rental consumption in Japan and the softening of the Japanese Yen have made a significant impact on regional spending.
- Transactional movie spending in CE Europe increased by 7.8% and L America showed year-on-year growth of 2.2%. However, these two regions combined still only captured a 7% share of worldwide transactional movie spending in 2013.
Movies generate the majority of filmed entertainment spending in five key world regions analyzed.
- In 2013, movies accounted for 80% of total transactional movie spending in N America, 85% in Asia Pacific, 76% in W Europe, 94% in CE Europe and 89% in L America.
