There were several high profile smartphone launches in Q2 2014 such as the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8. The results clearly show though that such high profile, high-end launches are increasingly less important for Android brands as both Samsung and HTC struggled. Huawei, Xiaomi and Motorola instead grew through their strengths in the lower end of the smartphone market. 4G and NFC passed important milestones in widespread adoption during the quarter too.

Highlights:

  • Total handset shipments grew 14% year-on-year; the highest seen since before the financial crisis of 2008.
  • Samsung has now lost over 5% market share over the past three quarters.
  • Apple’s iPhone selling price dropped below €440 for the first time in over 5 years as it expands its reach in emerging markets.
  • IHS expects Apples to surpass Microsoft (Nokia) as the second largest handset manufacturer by volume by the end of the year.
  • Huawei surpasses 20m smartphone shipments as it embarks on ambitious brand building campaign.
  • In less than 4 days, iOS 8 was installed on a greater share of iPhones than any OS version on Android devices.
