The Portuguese addressable market for online video reached over 2.3m broadband households in 2013 - a comparable size to other Western European markets including Austria, which has 2.2m broadband households, Denmark (2.1m) and Norway (1.91m). The Norwegian paid-for online video market was worth €79m in 2013 and the Danish market worth €36m, while the total size of the paid-for online video market in Portugal in 2013 was just under €3m. This report offers insight into the latest trends and key market players in the Portuguese paid-for online video market.

Highlights:

In 2013 the Portuguese paid-for online video market grew by 60% and nearly reached €3m. Portugal remains one the smallest online video markets in Western Europe, despite having an addressable market of over 2.3m broadband households - comparable with much more developed markets, including Austria, Denmark, Norway and others.

The paid-for online video market in Portugal is still largely driven by transactional services. Apple iTunes and Google Play (from March 2014) are currently available on the market; Xbox Video and Sony Playstation Store are currently not available in Portugal. Local services are limited to transactional video stores from pay TV operators Meo and NOS, which are available primarily to pay TV users and subscribers of the respective multiscreen services.

The subscription market is dominated by multiscreen offers from pay TV operators Meo and NOS, which offer bundled and standalone subscription services. Similarly to the transactional market, there are no pure online local services with subscription offers. Apart from handful of small international services, no major international or pan-regional SVoD services are present in Portugal.
