Console gaming enters a critical phase, as the generational torch is handed down from the outgoing hardware to the newcomers, most recently completed with the release of PS4 and Xbox One. In this report, we look at the year-on-year performance for Q2, wherein the new consoles do initially manage to hold their own. Overall, Q2 2014 on 2013 showed only a slight sales volume decline across all consoles both TV and handheld. While TV consoles grew volume, the handheld sector is experiencing significant decline as the 3DS platform falls away.

  • Wii U shows strong year-on-year growth in Q2
  • PS4 is the strongest selling console across all platforms in Q2
  • Aside from the new platforms, Wii U and PS Vita, the sales volume of all platforms declined year-on-year
  • Sony held 57% market share in terms of TV console hardware sales in Q2
