On June 18, 2014 Qualcomm purchased Black Sand Technologies, a fabless semiconductor company specializing in the design and development of CMOS power amplifiers (PAs) for mobile devices. Black Sand was founded in 2005 and had undergone several series of funding. In 2012 the company announced a $10 million series C round of funding as the company began shipping its 3G PAs in volume.
Qualcomm announced in February that the ZTE Grand S2 would be the first handset to utilize the company’s CMOS power amplifier solutions used in the RF360 front end platform. The QFE2320 and QFE2340 are Multi Mode Multi Band (MMMB) power amplifiers with integrated switches and enable the handset to operate in all major cellular modes and cover the frequency range from 700MHz to 2700MHz. Given they have their own CMOS power amplifier solution which has now achieved volume, why would Qualcomm be interested in Black Sand?
