ABB, Cisco, Bosch and LG are aiming to develop a common smart home software platform to enable interoperability and exchange of information between devices and services, regardless of manufacturer or provider. On 28th October, the companies signed a memorandum of understanding to this effect, subject to approval by relevant competition authorities.

The intention of the consortium is to provide open standards for device communication, available to all manufacturers, software developers and service providers, but what impact is this likely to have on the industry?
