The new Premier League (PL) football season kicks off on Saturday 17 August. Under the new three-year media rights contract which comes into effect on the same day, BSkyB will split live rights with BT Sport. The telephone company is not the first challenger BSkyB has faced in the UK pay TV market since the PL started in 1992, but it is clearly going to be the most formidable.
