UAE cinema exhibitor VOX Cinemas plans to increase its presence in Middle East by opening five new sites in Oman (2), Lebanon (1) and Fujairah and Dubai in the Emirates (2) during 2013. VOX currently owns five cinemas with 50 screens across UAE, expecting to double its screen count after the aggressive growth plan. The entire chain is digitally equipped, with 18 3D screens out of the 50.
VOX Cinemas, formerly CineStar Cinemas, is now a wholly-owned subsidiary under Majid Al Futtaim Ventures, which is part of Majid Al Futtaim Group, a real estate conglomerate based in Dubai since 1992. The group is mainly structured in three branches: Majid Al Futtaim Properties, Majid Al Futtaim Retail and Majid Al Futtaim Ventures. The new cinemas which plan to open in 2013 will mainly be located in shopping malls developed by Majid Al Futtaim group.
One of the main competitors for Majid Al Futtaim is Grand Cinemas, owned by q.media. With 115 screens across 14 sites, Grand Cinemas is the largest exhibitor in UAE in terms of screen numbers. Grand Cinemas has a strong presence in other Middle East territories as well with 32 screens in Lebanon, 15 in Jordan and 8 in Kuwait. Grand Cinemas also plans to open a new site in Pearl Doha, UAE this year.
