The Chinese governing body for telecommunication, SARFT (State Administrator of Radio Film and Television), has issued an RFP for the recently launched satellite service on SinoSat 2. The request, for in excess of 3.5m digital set-top boxes, is expected to be won by several domestic firms. The state-run satellite service is intended to cover the blind-spots in digital coverage, primarily to remote villages. In addition to demanding high numbers of new digital boxes, the Chinese government have mandated the use of the domestically developed ABS-S standard, which is likely to be supplied by a single chipset provider to all the STB suppliers.
