Amazon announced today that it would be selling its wildly popular (by Amazon’s account) Kindle for nearly 20% less than it has been – for as little as $114. The Kindle is approaching the price of 3 hardcover books, a level that will make the device even more compelling. As the price of the Kindle nears the magical $100 level it becomes a device that is not only more affordable, but also the economics of an e-reader becomes more enticing. As libraries start to ramp their e-book offering and online sales of e-books rocket (led by Amazon) the ease and affordability of everything beyond the e-reader becomes clearer. While the Kindle is not a huge DRAM hog, replacing millions of books with DRAM consuming devices will have an impact on the market.
