Display Driver IC Forecast

Deluxe/Echostar's satellite distribution joint venture has signed up its first major client in Carmike Cinemas. Service can deliver all forms of digital content, including live alternative content, cutting out hard drive physical distribution. Download takes between 5 and 10 hours, depending on film size and format (2K, 4K, 2D, 3D).

Analysis
Deluxe/Echostar created joint venture in September 2010, aiming to become an industry standard by end 2012. There are other players in this area, such as Microspace, Cinedigm and Technicolor. There has also been considerable recent movement in Europe, between Arqiva, Eutelsat/Opensky and Smartjog. IHS Screen Digest estimates that 7.5 per cent of European cinemas were equipped with professional or domestic satellite equipment at end 2010. At end 2010, Carmike had 239 theatres with 2,236 screens in 36 states and was fourth largest US exhibitor. Circuit was one of the first to sign up to digitisation with Cinedigm, in the process transforming its business model from a largely second run cinema chain to a first-run circuit. Of the end 2010 estate, Carmike had 2,103 d-screens with 596 screens that are also equipped for 3-D.
